All I can ever see is that little red X in my e-mail, in my Web browser
One of the main areas where people see the red X is in their e-mail. If you use Outlook Express and are having trouble seeing pictures in your e-mail, open it up and go to Tools, Options and choose the Security tab. Make sure the "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" box is unchecked. Now, if you're sending an e-mail and people have been complaining to you about the pictures not showing up, try this: open up OE and go to Tools, Options, Send tab. Under the Mail Sending Format section, make sure HTML is selected and then click on the HTML Settings button. From there, make sure the "Send pictures with messages" box is checked. That should solve all of your e-mail issues.
If you're having trouble seeing images in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options and click on the Advanced tab. Look for the Multimedia section and make sure the box that says "Show Pictures" is checked. For Firefox, go to Tools, Options and click on the Web Features icon. Make sure the "Load Images" box is checked as well.
Another cause may be that your browser security settings are set too high, which prevents you from accessing the Web site that handles the images. In IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Security tab and click on the Default Level button. Make sure your settings are set somewhere around the medium level.
Another cause could be your antivirus or firewall settings. Look for a setting that says "Disable Web Bugs" and make sure it's turned off. That should allow all the images to pass through so that you can see them.
There are also a couple other simple reasons why your images may be blocked. One is that you're looking at a Web site that is busy, temporarily shut down or offline. A Web host could also be working on certain things on the site, causing the images to be down. If everything else we've discussed above is set correctly and you're still not seeing the images, that might be your problem. All you can really do is just try the site again later. AVG update Windowscrash herstellen
USER32.DLL is verplaatst naar de 'Virus Vault' van AVG
In het geval u niet in staat bent uw Windows XP operating system te draaien na AVG 8.0 virus definition update (DB: 270.9.0/1777) en u heeft geen Windows XP installatie CD, ga dan alstublieft als volgt te werk om deze situatie op te lossen:
We hebben een oplossing dat het hierboven genoemde probleem kan repareren. U kunt de volgende boot (herstart) media gebruiken: CD-ROM of USB flash drive. Als u CD-ROM wilt gebruiken, volg dan alstublieft de instucties in gedeelte A), in het geval van USB flash drive volgt u de stappen in gedeelte B). Als u hier mee klaar bent is het (in beide gevallen) noodzakelijk de aanvullende instructies zoals beschreven in gedeelte C) te volgen.
A. CD-ROM instructies (dit wordt aangeraden):
1. Download de CD image ==> http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/bootcd_en.iso
2. Gebruik uw favoriete CD brandsoftware om de gedownloade image te branden (BELANGRIJK: Gebruik de "Burn CD from image"* optie).
3. Voer de CD in de CD-ROM drive van de betreffende computer en herstart de computer. Het zou vanaf de CD moeten herstarten. Als dit niet het geval is, dient u de gebruikshandleiding van het moederboard te raadplegen om uit te vinden hoe de computer vanaf een CD kan herstarten.
4. Ga door met de instructies in sectie C).
B. USB flash drive instructies (alleen beschikbaar voor computers die USB boot functies ondersteunen):
1. Download het USB flash archive ==> http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/rescue_en.zip
2. Haal de inhoud van het "rescue.zip" archive naar uw USB flash drive.
3. BELANGRIJK: ga naar de stam van de flash drive.
WAARSCHUWING: verzeker u er van dat u de volgende stap alleen uitvoert op de flash drive. Als u de volgende stap op een lokale schijf uitvoert kan dit BOOT BESTANDEN OP UW HARDE
SCHIJF VERNIETIGEN!
4. Start de "makeboot.bat" batch (let op dat het die is van de USB flash drive) en volg de instructies.
5. Plaats de USB flash drive in de betreffende computer en herstart de computer. Het zou vanaf de USB flash drive moeten herstarten. Als dit niet het geval is, dient u de gebruikshandleiding van het moederboard te raadplegen om uit te vinden hoe de computer vanaf een USB flash drive kan herstarten. N.B. deze functie wordt niet op alle moederboards ondersteund.
C. Aanvullende instructies:
1. Herstart de computer vanaf de CD-ROM of USB flash drive zoals beschreven in de instructies van A) en B).
2. Volg het reddingsproces.
3. Log op Windows in als Beheerder.
4. Update het AVG programma (Open de AVG Gebruikers Interface en klik op de knop "Nu updaten")
5. Wijzig de naam van het bestand "avgrsx.exe_off" naar "avgrsx.exe". Dit bestand bevindt zich in de AVG 8.0 Program folder (C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8 by default)´.

How to Create Bootable USB Drive to Install Windows Vista
It might become very useful when you don’t have access to DVD drive.
1. First format your USB drive in NTFS file system. You can do it by attaching your USB drive to your system and then format it from My Computer window.
2. Now open Command Prompt window from Start menu. Right-click on Command Prompt entry in start menu and select “Run as administrator” option.
3. Now type diskpart in Command Prompt window and press Enter. It’ll launch DiskPart program
4. Now provide following command: list volume
It’ll show a list of all drives in your system. Look for your USB drive entry.
f.e.g. the USB drive is “G” which you can determine from its “Type” entry.
Now you have to select the USB drive volume by providing select volume no. command. Since in our case volume no. of USB drive is “Volume 4″, the command would be:
select volume 4
Now we have to make this drive active. So provide active command:
active
Now exit from DiskPart using exit command.
5. Now we need to create Boot sector on USB drive. We’ll use “bootsect.exe” utility for this task. You can find this utility in Windows Vista setup disk. It’ll be present in “Boot” directory.
Now provide following command in Command Prompt:
bootsect /nt60 G:
(Here G is drive letter of USB drive. Replace it with the correct drive letter if your system has some other letter for USB drive.)
6. At last, copy all files/folders from Vista Setup DVD to your USB drive and you have done.
Now you can boot using your USB drive and can install Windows Vista in any system.

Onderzoekers van het Amerikaanse Idaho National Laboratory hebben een nieuwe methode ontwikkeld om zonne-energie om te zetten in elektrische energie op een zeer efficiënte wijze. Hierbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van een constructie waarbij nanoantennes zijn aangebracht op een plastic folie. Door deze antennes wordt infrarood straling, warmte dus, omgezet in een elektrische stroom. Volgens de onderzoekers van het Idaho National Laboratory (INL) bedraagt het rendement van deze omzetting meer dan 80 %. Dat is veel meer dan momenteel mogelijk is met zonnecellen (die alleen maar op zichtbaar licht reageren). Bovendien werkt het nieuwe systeem ook met andere warmtebronnen. Een ander voordeel van het nanoantenne-systeem is het feit dat de flexibele folie ook kan worden gebruikt als energie-opwekkende omhulling van GSM-toestellen en andere draagbare apparaten. Ook is de productie volgens de medewerkers van INL vrij goedkoop. Ze vermoeden dat het nieuwe systeem gewone zonnecellen op den duur waarschijnlijk geheel van de markt zal verdringen.
De nanoantennes kunnen gefabriceerd worden van verschillende materiaalsoorten, zoals goud, mangaan en koper. Dit materiaal wordt aangebracht op een laag polyethyleen die op een speciale wijze behandeld is. Op een cirkelvormig oppervlak van 15 cm diameter bevinden zich meer dan 10 miljoen miniatuur-antennes.
Voordat het nieuwe systeem daadwerkelijk kan worden ingezet voor het opwekken van stroom, moet volgens de wetenschappers van INL eerst nog één groot probleem worden ooverwonnen. Met een opslagcapaciteit van 1,5 terabyte vestigt Seagate een nieuw record voor harde schijven.
Vorige record van 1 terabyte, waar Hitachi destijds mee uitpakte.
Het gaat om de Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, die eigenlijk vier schijven (platters) van 375 GB gebruikt om het nieuwe record te bereiken.
Dit gebeurt in combinatie met PMR-technologie.
Daarbij worden de data als het ware rechtopstaand weggeschreven, wat voor plaatsbesparing zorgt. - Nog een nieuw record: Laptopschijven zijn tot nu toe beperkt gebleven tot 320 GB.

HD traffic maakt gebruik van meerdere bronnen

Goed nieuws voor wie wacht op de opvolger van Intels Core 2. Volgens de eerste benchmarks is de processor met codenaam Nehalem twintig tot vijftig procent sneller dan zijn voorganger. Het stroomverbruik ligt gemiddeld tien procent hoger.
Hardwaresite Anantech kreeg op de Computex-beurs in Taiwan de kans om een Nehalem-systeem uitgebreid te testen. De processor klokte gemiddeld af op 2,66 Ghz, heeft vier kernen en bezit de hyperthreading-technologie die we al van de Pentium 4 kennen. In vergelijking met een 2,66 Ghz Core-2 Quad is de Nehalem 28 procent sneller voor het coderen naar het DivX-filmformaat. Voor het omzetten naar H.264 is de processor 48 procent sneller.
Bij 3D-rendering met POV-Ray en 3ds Max is de chip respectievelijk 36 en 40 procent sneller. Enkel bij de test met Cinebench-R10 blijft het voordeel beperkt tot twee procent, al wordt hier de hyperthreading niet benut.
De resultaten zijn een opvolger zeker waardig, al moet benadrukt worden dat ze voorwaardelijk zijn zolang de Nehalem nog niet verkoopklaar is. De quadcore op het 45-nanometer platform wordt verwacht voor het vierde kwartaal van dit jaar.

Do you use Yahoo!, Hotmail or AOL as your main e-mail program? If so, let me ask you this: have you ever switched over from Outlook Express to one of those because you thought it would be a better e-mail experience? If you answered yes, do you miss Outlook Express and all it had to offer? Okay, enough questions. If you said yes again, keep reading, because this is the tip for you!
If you would like to continue using your Yahoo!, Hotmail or AOL account, but prefer to use it with Outlook Express, there's good news, because you can do that! You can use both of the e-mail programs you're familiar with together to create your own e-mail heaven. Here's how:
Yahoo!
The first thing you have to do is get your Web based Yahoo! account into a POP account so that Outlook Express can understand it. The best program for that is probably YPOPS. It's easy to use and you will be able to access all of your e-mail safely with it. You can download YPOPS here. Once you have it downloaded, get it up and running and then open Outlook Express. Go to Tools, Accounts, Add, Mail.
Now, type in the name you want to use and click Next. On the next screen, you'll want to enter your Yahoo! e-mail address and click Next again. Ensure that POP3 is selected under the section that says "My incoming server is a (blank) server" and enter in "localhost" under the part that says "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server." Type in the same thing ("localhost") where it says "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" and then click Next.
On the following screen, type in your Yahoo! mail username under the "Account name" section. If you're not sure what your username is, it's just the beginning part of your e-mail address. Next, type in your Yahoo! mail password (whatever it may be). Click Next and then click Finish. Now, for the next part, highlight "localhost" in the Internet Accounts window and choose Properties. Then type "Yahoo! Mail" under Mail Account. That's it! Click OK and then click Close.
Your Yahoo! e-mail will then be brought in through Outlook Express and you can enjoy all the features. You can also go back to your YPOPS account and change some settings within that, such as your bulk mail folder, sent messages, deleted messages, etc. Just double click on the YPOPS icon and change whatever you want.
Hotmail
For your Hotmail account, you'll still need a POP program that OE can understand. For that, FreePOPs is recommended and you can download it here. Once that's done, go to the Start menu, All Programs and choose FreePOPs so that it will be open and ready. Next, open Outlook Express and go to Tools, Accounts, Add, Mail.
Next, type in the name you want to use and click Next. On the next screen, you'll want to enter your Hotmail e-mail address and click Next again. Ensure that POP3 is selected under the section that says "My incoming server is a (blank) server" and enter in "localhost" under the part that says "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server." For the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" section, type in your ISP's mail server. (That's usually the same server you have used before with any non-Hotmail account). Click Next when you're done.
Now, enter in your complete Hotmail e-mail address under the "Account name" area and type in your Hotmail password. Click Next and then click Finish. Now, go back and highlight the new Hotmail account you created under the Internet Accounts list and choose Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and enter "2000" into the "Server Port Numbers/Incoming mail (POP3)" section. Click OK and Close. You can now start receiving your Hotmail e-mail in Outlook Express and you can also go back to FreePOPs and change your settings to fit your preferences.
AOL
But the basics are that AOL allows any e-mail client that has IMAP support to send and receive e-mail. Well, it just so happens that Outlook Express is one of those programs.
So, open Outlook Express and go to Tools, Accounts, Add, Mail. Type in your name and click Next. Now, enter in your AOL e-mail address and click Next again. For the "My incoming mail server is" section, choose IMAP and under the "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP) server" area, type "imap.aol.com" (without the quotes). Now, in the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box, type "smtp.aol.com."
Next, under the "Account name" area, enter in your AOL screenname, which will be the beginning part of your e-mail address. Then type in your AOL password and click Next and then Finish. Under the Internet Accounts window, highlight "imap.aol.com" and choose Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and enter "587" under "Server Port Numbers for Outgoing Mail (SMTP)."
Now, go on over to the IMAP tab and make sure the line that says "Store special folders on IMAP server" is unchecked. Click OK when you're done. Close that window out and choose Yes for the next option. That will then start the download of the AOL folders list into Outlook Express. Click OK when that's done and you're all set!
Keep in mind that your AOL e-mail will stay on the server, so you should go in and visit your regular AOL account every once in awhile, just to keep it cleared out. Other than that, you can go and enjoy your AOL e-mail while using Outlook Express.

Electricity from the exhaust pipe from motor vehicles
Researchers are working on a thermoelectric generator that converts the heat from car exhaust fumes into electricity. The module feeds the energy into the car’s electronic systems. This cuts fuel consumption and helps reduce the CO2 emissions from motor vehicles.
In an age of dwindling natural resources, energy-saving is the order of the day. However, many technical processes use less than one-third of the energy they employ. This is particularly true of automobiles, where two-thirds of the fuel is emitted unused in the form of heat. About 30 percent is lost through the engine block, and a further 30 to 35 percent as exhaust fumes. Scientists all over the world are developing ways of harnessing the unused waste heat from cars, machines and power stations, in order to lower their fuel consumption.
There is clearly a great need for thermoelectric generators, or TEGs for short. These devices convert heat into electrical energy by making use of a temperature gradient. The greater the temperature difference, the more current TEGs can produce. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM are developing thermoelectric materials, modules and systems to harness the residual heat in automobiles. “The temperatures in the exhaust pipe can reach 700 degrees Celsius or more,” says Dr. Harald Böttner, head of the Thermoelectric Systems department. “The temperature difference between the exhaust pipe and a pipe carrying engine cooling fluid can thus be several hundred degrees Celsius.” The thermoelectric converter makes use of this huge differential: Driven by the flow of heat between the hot exhaust fumes and the cold side of a coolant pipe, the charge carriers pass through special semiconductors, thus producing an electric current similar to a batterie. The long-term objective is to make the alternator superfluous and to supply energy to the constantly rising number of power consumers in the car. TEGs could cover a significant proportion of a car’s power requirements: “This would make it possible to cut gas consumption by between five and seven percent,” says Böttner.
A simple calculation will illustrate how important it is to increase the energy efficiency of cars: There are about 50 million licensed motor vehicles in Germany, each of which is – as a basis for an estimation – on the road for an average of 200 hours a year. If their waste heat was utilized by TEGs during that time, with an output of one kilowatt sufficient to power parts of vehicle electronics, this would add up to ten terawatt hours of energy per annum – a significant contribution. The researchers are still in the experimentation phase at present, but they plan to build the first prototypes very soon.

VRT Lanceert één-HD
VRT lanceert Eén-HD
De VRT biedt zijn kijkers deze zomer voor het eerst uitzendingen in HD aan. De primeur gaat naar de Tour de France (in juli) en de Olympische spelen (in augustus). Voor alle duidelijkheid: dit geldt enkel voor kabelkijkers met HD-settopbox, dus niet voor antennekijkers ook niet als die over een settopbox beschikken. Jan Cuypers, directeur operationele afdelingen, maakte van de gelegenheid gebruik om het HD-verhaal aan de pers te vertellen. Wat is HD? Waarom koos de VRT voor 720p50? En wat brengt de toekomst?
Grote beeldschermen vreten meer pixels
De reden waarom HD geleidelijk noodzakelijk wordt, is duidelijk. Omdat de beeldschermen steeds groter worden, moet ook de kwaliteit van het beeld volgen. Anders zie je de vierkante pixels in beeld. Waarom koos de VRT (samen met de EBU) voor de 720p50 norm en niet voor de (vooral Amerikaanse norm) 1080i25. Kort samengevat komt het hierop neer dat de VRT voor het comfort van de individuele gebruiker heeft gekozen die geen gebruik maakt van reusachtige bioscoopschermen. Bovendien geeft 720p50 betere resultaten bij dynamische, sterk bewegende beelden, zoals bij sportwedstrijden.
Resolutie en compressie
De uitleg daarvoor was goed te begrijpen. In het geval van 720p50 levert de camera 50 maal per seconde een volledig beeld. In het geval van 1080p25 levert de camera 50 maal per seconde een beeld met de halve resolutie. In het laatste geval is het beeld perfect bij rustige beelden, maar bij snelle bewegingen loopt het al gauw mis. Bovendien moeten al die beelden gecompresseerd worden om ze te kunnen ontvangen. Bij sterke compressie is de kwaliteit van 720p50 beter, vooral als het vermogen van de ontvanger beperkt is, wat bij de gewone kijker dikwijls het geval is.Nota bene: 720 wijst op 720 verticale lijnen en p voor 'progressive' (tegenover de i van 'interlaced').
Een apart kanaal voor HD
Lena De Meerleer, manager VRT Sport, gunde de pers een blik op de zomerprogrammering. Vooraf dien je te weten dat voor HD-uitzendingen een apart kanaal voorzien wordt (Eén-HD). In juli zien we daar de rechtstreekse ritverslagen van de Ronde van Frankrijk, maar je kunt ook kiezen voor SD (standaarddefinitie) op je gewone kanaal. Voor de Olympische spelen zijn er 177 uur HD voorzien (tegenover 250 uur live en 50 uur samenvatting op SD).

The older version of Windows Live Messenger cannot be removed

What you'll need to do is remove the bits of the old install in the registry. To do so,
download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup tool:

It's pretty simple to use though. After the cleanup utility is installed (yes, more
installing), head over to Program Files\Windows Installer Cleanup and run the msicuu
executable. You'll be prompted with a list of installed products, including Messenger.
Just select Windows Live Messenger and choose Remove.
Now you should be able to install the latest. If you'd like a direct link to the latest
version, you can grab it here (avoiding the Live Installer stuff):
